Virginia Mae Barnes, 80, of Monette, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born in McRae on Feb. 18, 1926, she spent the majority of her life in the Monette area. She was a homemaker and also served as secretary on Buffalo Island Rural Water Board for 25 years. She was an avid reader and of the Methodist belief.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lee Barnes; her parents, William Todd and Mable Todd Lamb; a daughter, Jenny Lee Gardner Mobley; three brothers, William Todd Jr., J.V. Todd and Donald Todd, and a sister, Ruth Cranford Healy.
Survivors include sons, Roy Lynn Barnes of Aviano, Itlay, and Bill Mack Barnes of south Florida; daughter, Jackie Todd Barnes of Jonesboro; two sisters, Mary Barnes of Monette and Dortha Barnes of Jonesboro; four grandchildren, Allen Gardner, Jerry Lee Gardner, Sara Kelly Barnes and Christian Lee Barnes, and two great- grandchildren.
A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m., Friday at Gregg Funeral Home in Monette with Rev. Jimmy Anderson officiating. Burial was private.
