Billy Joe Wood, 69, of Jonesboro, formerly of Caraway, died at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro on Sunday, June 18, 2006. He was born in Caraway to W.B. and Sylvia Elrod Wood. He was the business manager for the Jonesboro Human Development Center for 21 years before retiring. He graduated from caraway High School and Arkansas State University. He was the NEA director for nine years for the Arkansas State Employees Association. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Caraway.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline Wood of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Michelle Mantle and Patty and Mike Brewer, all of Jonesboro; his mother, Sylvia Wood of Jonesboro; two brothers, Vernon Wood and David Wood, both of Jonesboro; five sisters, Estelene Malone of Williams, Ariz., and Helen Thomas, Barbara Wood, Kathryn Bishop and Judy Hook, all of Jonesboro; and five grandchildren, Lashandra Brewer, Robert Brewer, John Brewer, Amber Slater and Amanda Mantle.
He was preceded in death by his father, W.B. Wood; an infant sister, Bettie Louise Wood; and a son-in-law, Joe Mantle.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Langford-Bookout Funeral home of Jonesboro with Rick Stevens, Bruce Primm and Wayne Pickett officiating. Burial was in the Caraway Cemetery in Caraway.
Active pallbearers were Doug Thomas, Jonathan Wood, Bryan Hook, Brad Hook, Gary Don Hurst and Ronnie Hurst.
Honorary pallbearers were James Prescott, John Grigsby, Jerry Cooper, Tommy Wood, Doris Thompson and Jeanette Thomas.
