Hulen Faulkner, 89, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Manila, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at Kirby Pines Estates in Memphis. Born at Beach Grove, he was the son of the late E.W. and Alice Batey Faulkner and had lived most of his life in Manila.

He was a graduate of Arbyrd High School and the Draughon's Business College in Memphis. At age 19 Mr. Faulkner became manager of the Bertig Cotton Gin and later managed Caudill Brother's and Fleeman Gin companies. He retired as vice president of the former Merchant's & Planter's Bank of Manila. He was active in scouting, having served as Scout Master for Explorer Scouts. He served under General George Patton's 3rd Army, 11th Armored Division during World War II. He received campaign medals for action in the Battle of the Bulge, The Rhineland and Central Europe. His major duties were with the reconnaissance patrol unit. He was a 32nd Degree Mason having served as Master of the Manila Masonic Lodge for many years. He was a member and Deacon of Manila First Baptist Church and served as a men's Sunday school teacher, church treasurer and trustee.

His favorite pastimes were spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, gardening, National Geographic and travel.

Mr. Faulkner is survived by his wife, Francys Norris Faulkner of Memphis; two sons, Norris George Faulkner of Uriah, Ala., and William Edward "Bill" Faulkner of Dallas, Ga.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Howard Funeral Chapel in Manila with Rev. William Piercy officiating. Burial was in Manila Cemetery.
