William Garrad Fox

Lenoir City, Tenn.

William Garrad Fox, 89, of Lenoir City, Tenn., formerly of Manila, died Nov. 14, 2007, at the Summitt View Nursing Home. Born at Manila, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Vernon Fox and was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Manila High School. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas in 1939 where he received B.S. and B.B.A Degrees. Mr. Fox served in World War II as a medic in the Army 4th Division. He fought in the battles of Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor above and beyond the call of duty, the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the European-African Middle-Eastern Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars. He was retired from First Bank and Trust Company in Cairo, Ill., having served as the executive vice-president and trust officer. He was active in community affairs where he served as past president of the Manila Lions Club, The Cairo, Ill., Rotary Club and the Cairo-Alexander County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Fox was a member of the Methodist Church where he held various leadership positions.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Hubbard Fox, of the home; two sons, Garrad L. Fox and William Richard Fox; daughters-in-law, Barbara and Joy; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Manila Cemetery with military honors. Pastor Troy Thomas of Manila United Methodist Church officiated.
