Leona May Harbin McWhirter - Lake Charles, La.

Leona May McWhirter, 83, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003. She was a native of Turkey Run Community at Monette. She was born in 1920, the daughter of Agnes and Marvin Harbin. She had lived many years in Lake Charles, La., moving from Creole, La., after her retirement. She graduated from Monette High School in 1937. She received her bachelor degree from Henderson State Teacher College in Arkadelphia in 1948. She was a school teacher for more than 34 years, most of which were with the Cameron Parish School System. She was a Veteran of World War II serving in the Navy. She was past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Survivors include a son, Michael McWhirter of Lake Charles; a daughter, Dorothy Maude Francis of Lake Charles; a granddaughter Holly Francis Fruge and husband, Chris, of Iowa; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Fruge; and three sisters, Sue Kyzer of Bebee, Beatrice Burnett of Dardanelle, and Anna Brown of Jonesboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ellis McWhirter; her parents, and several brothers and sisters.

The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in Hixon Funeral Home of Creole with Rev. John Moffitt officiating. Entombment was in Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
