Bertha Mae McDoniel

Bertha Mae McDoniel, 100, formerly of Monette passed away Sunday, December 12, 2010, at Fulton County Hospital in Salem.

She was born July 18, 1910, in Dekalb, Texas, to the late Silas and Cynthia Cleghorn. She married Elijah Truman McDoniel on May 3, 1925, and was together until his death in 1979. She was a minister's wife, a homemaker and sold Avon for over 39 years. Mrs. McDoniel was a member of the Monette First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School at the nursing home for many years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family. Mrs. Mac had a loving smile and hug for everyone.

Survivors include four children, Mary Ellen McDoniel Taylor (Harvey) of Albertsville, Ala., Edna Lois McDoniel Sample of Cherokee Village, John Wesley McDoniel (Virginia) of Merced, Calif. and Carolyn Sue McDoniel of Cordova, Tenn.; two sisters, Marjorie Simpson of Leachville and Helen Mitchell of Bernie, Mo.; a brother, Billy Cleghorn of Royal Oak, Mich.; twelve grandchildren, Mary Beth Foshee, Linda Johnston, Steven Taylor, Peggy Simmons, Danny Sample, Joey Sample, Jeannie Strother, Ann Pedroso, Jack McDoniel, Ruth Goodwin, Carol McDoniel and Kevin Hollingsworth; fifteen great-grandchildren and sixteen great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers; seven sisters; a great-grandchild and two great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life was held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 16, 2010, at the Monette First Baptist Church with Steven Taylor and Joseph Sample officiating. Burial followed in the Monette Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Monette.

Visitation was from 4:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the Gregg Funeral Home in Monette.
