Charlie Merle Smith

Charlie Merle Smith, 70, of Blytheville, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, in Manila. Born Jan. 26, 1937, in Booneville, Miss., the son of the late Lee and Elvie Olive Smith, he was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Smith was a retired self-employed mechanic and loved animals.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Charla Langston; two brothers, John W. Smith and Aaron Smith; and a sister, Helen Earnest.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Bertha Crabtree Smith of Manila; brother, Thomas L. Smith of Iuka, Miss.; two step-daughters, Lovetta Freeman of Manila and Vanessa Shirley of Monette; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Manila Cemetery with Billy Holifield officiating.
