Bud McWhirter - Manila

Huron "Bud" McWhirter, 81, of Manila, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Manila Nursing Center. A lifelong Manila area resident he was the son of the late Charles Ellis and Maude Kilgore McWhriter. At the age of nine months Bud had diptheria resulting in permanent hearing loss. In spite of his handicap and never having attended public schools, he was an avid reader and was known to read several different newspapers each day. He loved sports of all kinds and loved to be in a crowd. Bud loved people as was evidenced by his never failing smile and jolly personality. He worked as a freight handler at the Manila depot until the railroad closed the depot. He worked the next 57 years for the Manila Post Office as custodian and gave 26 years of loyal service to the Manila Volunteer Fire Department. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two brothers, Kenneth McWhirter of Manila and Ellis McWhirter of Lake Charles, La.

The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Howard Funeral service chapel in Manila with Rev. William Piercy officiating. Burial was in the Manila Cemetery.

Members of the Manila Volunteer Fire Department served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Arnold Sandbothe, Lowell Polston, Jake Rice and Art Slaton.
