Lady Mustangs edge Manila 37-33
Buffalo Island Central slipped past Manila 37-33 in senior girls basketball action Thursday night at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette.
BIC jumped to a 9-2 lead after the first break and held a 22-16 advantage at the half. Manila fought back in the third quarter and chopped the Lady Mustang lead to 27-25 entering the final frame.
Jealynn Cates topped BIC with 14 points while Morgan James pumped in 13 more. Haddyn Hurst scored six, Brianna Lambert tallied three while Vicky Esparza added one point.
Brailey Hampton paced the Lady Lions with 12 points. Meg Gifford and Anna Grace Adams tallied five points apiece, Sydney Adcock contributed four, Kaitlynn Adams scored three while Madison Bibbs and Ashten Wallace added two points apiece.
In junior high action, Manila defeated BIC 37-28. Sadie McDonald and Macy Darby scored seven points each while Olivia May, Madison Hitchcock and Kara Watts tallied six points apiece. Taylor Perkins and Callie Costner netted two points each while Diana Adams contributed one point.
Krystyn Hawkins led BIC with nine points while Lexi Riley added eight. Halle Wells tallied five, Ashtyn Hawkins netted four while Emily Davis added two points.
The Lady Mustangs began the week by thrashing Palestine Wheatley 52-27. Hurst poured in a game high 24 points, including five triples, to lead BIC. James scored 12, Lambert had six, Esparza netted five while Emma Graddy chipped in three points. Hanah Carle added two points.
BIC led 15-6 after the first period, 27-16 at the half and 45-19 entering the final frame.
In the junior high contest, BIC doubled up Palestine Wheatley 33-15. Emily Davis scored 12 points. Riley and Krystyn Hawkins pitched in six points each, Wells tallied four while Ashtyn Hawkins and Chasney Griggry added two points.
Nita Taylor led Palestine Wheatley with 10 points.
BIC finished the week, competing in the Fight Like a Girl Classic, Friday night at Marmaduke. The Lady Mustangs fell to Highland, 76-28. Briley Pena topped the Rebels with 23 points. Abby Dietsche recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards. Macy Qualls chipped in 13 while Molly McBryde added 12.
Hurst led the Lady Mustangs with 15 points. Carle, Esparza and Lambert all scored three points apiece while Cates and Graddy added two points each.
The Lady Mustangs return to action Monday night when they travel to Manila for a rematch with the Lady Lions. BIC hosts Mammoth Spring Tuesday night before entertaining Marked Tree Thursday night at the Mustang Athletic Complex.
