BIC Drama Department presented "Singing' in the Rain Jr."
The BIC Drama Department presentation “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” played to sellout crowds on October 11, 12 and 14 at the Melody Theatre in Leachville.
This is the third presentation for the drama group since they started last year, and crowd approval was over the top.
The play was adapted from the original award-winning screenplay of one of the world’s most celebrated movie musicals. BIC’s rendition of the play showcased the singing, dancing, humor, and acting talents of the student performers.
Nancy Spencer served as Department Sponsor and Director of the play, assisted by Music Director Leigh Jackson, and Choreographer Elea Pulliam.
“I am so proud of the Drama Department students,” Spencer said. “They worked on making this play a success for over 120 hours, with practicing, singing and dancing, rehearsals of stage moves, as well as costumes, lighting, props, set and stage decorations.”
Try-outs for the play began the first week of May of this year, followed by auditions and casting. The stage craft class started immediately began construction of the set and props.
“Elea and Leigh were both such an important part of the music and dancing portion of the play,” Spencer said. “We were fortunate to have such great support from the BIC administration. Superintendent Gaylon Taylor has a great love of the arts, and gave never-ending encouragement. Kima Stewart was able to secure a large grant for funding. We had help from donors and supporters throughout the Leachville and Monette communities. I couldn’t have done this play without the help of my two student workers, Assistant Director Alissa Hughes and Stage Manager Krista Cox. Period costumes for the play were donated in memory of Mrs. Orene Perez.”
A soft opening was held on Thursday, October 11, for parents and district employees. A dinner theater was held on Friday night beginning with a meal served at the BIC Elementary, followed by a trip to the theater to see the performance. The Sunday performance was a matinee held at 2 p.m.
“We would have loved to perform the play for the students, but did not have a place big enough to do that,” Spencer said. “We are thankful that we have been allowed the use of the Melody Theatre.”
The Stage Class will be providing a thirty minute one act play for the elementary in December titled “It’s sad, so sad when an Elf goes bad.” The next full scale play will be a murder mystery in April 2019, titled “You have the right to remain dead.”
