Former Monette resident wins six gold medals
Tina Nuckles of Jonesboro, a native of Monette, brought home several medals in the Arkansas Senior Olympics held Saturday, Sept. 15.
The Senior Olympic competition was held in Little Rock at the Donaghey Student Center on the campus of UALR.
Nuckles won six gold medals and qualified to compete in the National Senior Olympics to be held in Albuquerque, N.M.
She won the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle, 50 yard butterfly, 100 yard butterfly, 50 yard breaststroke, and 100 yard breaststroke.
Nuckles is a 1983 graduate of Monette High School and 1986 graduate of Arkansas State University. She is a member of the Arkansas Masters Swimming Team and a member of the Trim Gym.
Nuckles started swimming about 10 years ago and this was her first big competition. She is looking forward to competing in the Nationals.
"I know the competition is going to be tough, but I'm going to go because I earned that position," Nuckles said. "I hope to compete in some Arkansas Masters Swimming competition between now and then."
Nuckles began water aerobics in the early 2000s to help with her severe arthritis but soon became bored and began swimming. For the last 10 years she has done the U.S. Masters Go the Distance program where participants swim, log miles and earn prizes. She has swam about 435 miles this year, a record for her.
Tina is married to Mark Gregory Nuckles, U.S. Army (Ret.), also a former Monette graduate.
