Junior Lions roar past Corning 32-8

Manila’s junior high football team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 32-8 victory over Corning Thursday night at Lion Field.

Kurt Overton got Manila on the board early by bolting 50 yards for a touchdown at the 7:40 mark of the opening period. Jordan Spray added the two-point conversion, giving the Lions a quick 8-0 lead.

Spray bulled his way into the end zone from a yard out early in the second quarter to increase Manila’s lead to 14-0.

Late in the second period, the Manila defense, spearheaded by Dustin Clark and Brent Wilson, stuffed the Bobcats on fourth down at the Corning 35. Manila quickly took advantage when Lion quarterback Tanner Miller hooked up with Dustin Clark for a two-yard pass play, giving Manila a first down at the Corning 14. An eight-yard pass from Miller to Clark set up a second and two at the Bobcat six. Miller then connected with brother Chase Miller on a six-yard touchdown strike, giving the Lions a 20-0 halftime advantage.

Overton scored his second touchdown of the night by scooting 36 yards into the end zone midway through the third quarter, putting Manila ahead 26-0.

The two teams swapped fourth quarter touchdowns, setting the final score at 32-8.

The junior Lions will look for victory number four when they travel to Osceola Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
