John Deaton was honored with a reception as he retires from coaching and starts a career in administration.

Coach John Deaton was honored Sunday afternoon, June 3, with a reception in recognition of his 23 years of coaching.

Family, friends, fellow coaches and former players were on hand to wish him well as he leaves coaching to be a full time administrator serving as Manila assistant principal in K-8 grades.

Deaton, a 1990 graduate of Manila High School, coached junior and senior girls at Rector for five years and one year at Gosnell coaching junior high boys before returning to Manila. He coached Manila seventh grade for one year and served as junior high boys coach and assistant senior high boys coach for the last 16 years of his coaching career. He has also served as coach and middle school dean of students for the last two years.

Deaton has enjoyed coaching through the years but is looking forward to his new position.

He has always been and will continue to be a Manila Lion supporter. He received the Junior High Coach of the Year Award for the 2017-2018 season.

Deaton and wife Danna have one daughter, Mary Scott, who is going into the seventh grade. Deaton said he plans to enjoy watching his daughter play basketball, along with all of the Manila Lion teams.
