Sims' game winner lifts Lions past Corning in extra innings
Manila’s Layne Sims belted a game winning RBI double in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Lions to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Corning in a marathon semifinal matchup in the 3A-3 District Tournament Saturday at Walnut Ridge.
The Bobcats got on the board in the first inning, scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The score held firm until the bottom of the seventh when the Lions rallied to tie the score on Michael Jorgensen’s two-run single. The two teams put up goose eggs over the next four and a half innings until Sims delivered the game winner.
Sims finished with a pair of hits as did teammates Joel Burrow and Brady Clark. Abraham Lopez worked the final three and one third innings to earn the victory. Lopez allowed no runs on just one hit and struck out three Bobcats. Jorgensen got the start and pitched the first eight and two thirds innings. The righthander fanned four and issued four bases on balls. Seth George started for Corning, going six and two thirds innings. George gave up two runs, eight hits, struck out two and walked two.
