Mustangs capture second consecutive district baseball title
Buffalo Island Central captured the 2A-2 District Baseball Championship with a convincing 8-2 victory over host Salem Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs jumped on top, scoring three runs in the top of the first. BIC plated single runs in the second and third frames to take a 5-1 lead, then pushed across three more tallies in the sixth to go ahead 8-1.
Gavin Gathright worked the first six innings for the Mustangs to gain the victory. Gathright allowed two earned runs on six hits while fanning six and walking three. Andrew McFarlin pitched a perfect seventh inning to close out the championship.
Kaleb Dublin laced two singles and had two RBI. Bryce Towery singled, doubled and scored twice, McFarlin cracked a pair of singles, scored a run, and had an RBI while Canon Walling doubled, scored twice, and walked three times. Logan Harrison belted a two-run double and scored once while Franklin Patterson roped an RBI double and scored a run. Caleb Suiter doubled and scored a run, Kyle Thrasher delivered an RBI single while Chayse Carmichael had a base hit.
The Mustangs advanced to the championship game with a 7-2 victory earlier in the day over Sloan Hendrix. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie entering the fifth inning before BIC erupted for four runs to take a 4-0 advantage. Sloan Hendrix answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but BIC answered with a three-spot in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
McFarlin went the distance to pick up the win, working seven innings of five-hit ball. The senior righthander allowed one earned run, struck out seven and walked one.
Harrison led the Mustangs at the plate, going 4-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Dublin was 3-4 including an RBI triple. Towery singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run while Walling blasted a double and scored a run. McFarlin roped an RBI single and scored once while Carmichael slapped a single and scored a run. Suiter scored once.
The Mustangs kicked off the tournament by routing Cotter 12-1 Thursday. McFarlin was the winning pitcher, working three innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits. McFarlin struck out five and did not issue a walk. Dublin finished the game, pitching two shutout innings, allowing one hit while striking out four.
Carmichael and McFarlin led BIC at the plate with a single, a double and four RBI apiece. Walling singled, doubled, and scored three runs, Thrasher had two singles, an RBI and scored three times while Patterson singled twice and scored a run. Towery ripped an RBI single and scored a pair of runs, Harrison cracked an RBI single and scored once while Dublin had a base hit and crossed the plate once.
The Mustangs begin regional tournament play Thursday at East Poinsett County as a number one seed.
The Lady Mustangs fell in the first round of the district tournament, losing to host Salem 15-0. BIC finished the season with a 5-13 mark.
