Lady Lions roar past Riverside 9-2

Manila rode the 16-strikeout performance of Ashten Wallace to upend Riverside 9-2 in high school softball action Thursday at Lake City.

The Lady Lions broke a 1-1 tie, scoring two runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead. After the Lady Rebels sliced the advantage to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the third, Manila answered with a three-spot in the top of the fourth. Manila added three more runs in the seventh to secure the win.

Wallace pitched a complete game two-hitter, allowing two unearned runs to gain the win. Katie Towery went the distance for Riverside and absorbed the loss. Towery surrendered five earned runs on nine hits while striking out six.

Lady Lion Ali Smith belted a pair of doubles, drove in a run, and scored once while Wallace helped her own cause by slashing a two-run single. Madison Bibbs hammered a triple while also singling, Bibbs had an RBI and scored a run while Ashlyn Jolly slapped an RBI double and scored twice. Jill Helton slammed a double and scored twice, Sydney Adcock drilled an RBI single and scored a run while Micah Lancaster singled and scored a run.

Riverside got an RBI single off the bat of Mallory Felton while Whitney Wagganor had Riverside’s other hit. Towery and Anna Mason scored the Lady Rebel runs.

Manila began the week with a road trip to East Poinsett County. The Lady Lions dropped a doubleheader Monday to the Warriors, losing the opener 1-0 before falling 9-6 in the nightcap.

Meagan Allen fired a two-hit shutout to pick up the win for EPC in the opener. Allen fanned 13 Lady Lions and walked three. The Lady Warriors scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Wallace suffered the loss for Manila, going four 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on just two hits. Wallace struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Brailey Hampton doubled while Bibbs singled for Manila’s only hits.

In the nightcap, EPC got three runs in the first, second and fourth innings to hold off Manila 9-6. Wallace took the loss, allowing nine runs on 10 hits.

Sasha Pannells singled and scored a pair of runs while Bibbs, Smith, and Adcock all belted singles and scored one run each. Helton, Wallace, and Jolly all had RBIs while Hampton scored a run.

Manila returns to action Monday with a road game at Piggott. The Lady Lions will play host to Gosnell on Tuesday.
