Lady Rebels suffer hard luck losses in softball action
Riverside suffered three losses on the softball diamond last week, including a pair of heartbreaking one-run decisions. The Lady Rebels began the week dropping an 8-3 contest Monday at Hoxie. Riverside watched Gosnell score the game winning run in the fifth inning to pull out an 8-7 victory over the Lady Rebels Tuesday on the road. Marked Tree scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to rally past Riverside 5-4 Friday.
Hoxie broke a 2-2 tie with Riverside, scoring five runs in the fourth inning to gallop past the Lady Rebels 8-3. Katie Towery suffered the loss, going six innings, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits while striking out six. Towery had a big day at the plate with a single, a double and a triple to go along with an RBI. Freshman Alexis Boatman clubbed a single and a triple, drove in a run and scored twice. Ashlynn Wright cracked a pair of singles and scored a run. Mallory Felton blasted a triple, Haven Robertson, Carmen Campbell and Carson Smith all drilled singles while Anna Mason had an RBI.
In Riverside’s loss to Gosnell, Mason suffered the defeat, working six innings, giving up all eight runs, only two of which were earned. The freshman righthander allowed five hits, fanned five and walked one.
Smith smashed a pair of triples, driving in three runs while scoring once. Campbell and Towery both hammered RBI doubles while Whitney Wagganor, Hannah Shinall, Felton, Mason, Boatman and Towery all scored runs.
Brittany Pharis belted a game winning RBI single to cap off a three-run rally, helping Marked Tree ease past the Lady Rebels 5-4. Ally Byers tied the game, hammering a two-run triple. Harley Daniels picked up the win, going all the way while adding a homerun.
Towery was the tough luck loser, giving up five runs, just one of which was earned. Towery allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked two.
Offensively, Smith had a pair of singles and scored once. Robertson, Felton and Towery all cracked RBI singles. Campbell singled and scored a run, Mason singled while Wagganor and Wright scored one run apiece.
Riverside returns to the diamond Monday when they host Rector. The Lady Rebels travel to Lepanto Tuesday to face East Poinsett County. Riverside entertains Manila Thursday and closes the week with a home game Friday against Bay.
