Lions roll past Lawrence County foes Hoxie and Walnut Ridge
Manila improved to 12-1 on the season with victories over Walnut Ridge and Hoxie last week. The Lions outlasted Hoxie 6-2 Monday on the road before shutting out Walnut Ridge 8-0 Friday at home.
Michael Parker pitched four and a third innings of shutout relief to gain the win over Hoxie. Parker allowed just two hits while striking out one batter. Starting pitcher Brock Birmingham went two and two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs on only one hit while fanning five.
Manila scored a single run in the first before adding two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs got their only two runs in the bottom of the third to slice the Lion lead to one run. Manila tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Lions out-hit Hoxie 5-3.
Joel Burrow led Manila offensively with a single, a double and a run scored. Abraham Lopez cracked a two-run single and scored a run. Brady Clark slashed a single and scored twice while Layne Sims had a base hit. Ethan Navarro scored a run and had an RBI, Birmingham drove in a run while Anthony Lopez scored once.
The Lions closed the week with an 8-0 whitewash of Walnut Ridge. Manila broke a scoreless tie, putting up four runs in the fourth. The Lions tacked on three more in the fifth and added another run in the sixth to close out the scoring. Manila out-hit the Bobcats 6-2.
Michael Jorgensen went the distance, throwing a two-hit shutout to pick up the win. The senior righthander fanned six and walked one.
Birmingham delivered the big blow for the Lions, smashing a bases-loaded double. Jeremiah Perez laced a two-run single and scored a pair of runs. Burrow walloped a double and scored twice while Abraham Lopez singled and scored a pair of runs. Jorgensen cracked a run scoring single, Sims doubled while Navarro scored a run.
Manila returns to action Monday when they travel to Corning to face the Bobcats. The Lions will take on Riverside Thursday at Lake City before finishing the week with a home game Friday against Westside.
