Buffalo Island Central opened the 2018 baseball season with a 7-3 victory over Marked Tree Tuesday at Monette. The Mustangs spotted the Indians three runs in the top of the first inning, but BIC hurler Gavin Gathright finished strong with a complete game four-hit victory.

Gathright surrendered three runs in the opening frame, all of which were unearned. The righthanded pitcher fired six shutout innings the rest of the way, striking out 11 while issuing just one walk.

Canon Walling singled, doubled, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases to pace the Mustang offense. Logan Harrison cracked a two-run double while Gathright also popped a base hit.

BIC picked up another victory Thursday, defeating East Poinsett County 6-2 at Monette. Andrew McFarlin was the winner on the bump, going the distance, scattering seven hits while allowing one earned run. The senior righthander struck out seven Warriors while walking two. McFarlin helped his own cause, going 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

BIC scored two runs in the first inning and added three more in the fourth. Harrison belted two doubles and drove in two runs while Walling singled, tripled and scored a run.

Hayden Tucker paced EPC with three singles.

The Mustangs return to the diamond March 29 with a road trip to Bay.
