Lady Mustangs outslug Bay 14-13

Buffalo Island Central scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a 14-13 come from behind victory over Bay in senior high softball action Thursday at Monette.

Bay jumped to a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half and led 6-2 going into the bottom of the third before the Lady Mustangs sliced the Lady Yellowjacket advantage to 6-4, scoring twice in their half of the frame. Bay increased its margin to 8-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth, but BIC exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning to take their first lead of the day, 10-8. Bay answered, scoring five runs in the top of the fifth to go back on top, 13-10. But the Lady Mustangs put together a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning and held Bay scoreless the rest of the way to pull out the win.

Olivia Cornish paced BIC at the plate, going 3-4, including a triple, with three RBI. Jealynn Cates laced three hits in four at bats while driving in a run. Emma Graddy singled, doubled and had two RBI for the Lady Mustangs.

Mallory Hartley singled, doubled and tripled while driving in six runs to lead Bay. Jordan Taylor added four hits for the Lady ‘Jackets and drove in a run.

BIC began the week, falling to Marked Tree 18-6 Tuesday afternoon at home. The Lady Indians scored six runs in the first inning and added six more in the fourth.

Cates cranked a two-run homer for the Lady Mustangs and scored twice. Cornish had a pair of singles, an RBI and scored two runs while Emma Graddy and Taylor Cole both drilled RBI singles and scored a run a piece. Hannah Carle added an RBI.

The Lady Mustangs closed the week, participating in the Bearcat Blast in Jonesboro where BIC picked up an 8-5 victory over Marked Tree. The Lady Mustangs scored two runs each in the first two innings to take an early 4-1 lead. The Lady Indians fought back, scoring three times in the fourth and once in the fifth to grab a 5-4 edge entering the final frame. BIC put together a stirring four run rally in the bottom of the sixth to post the come from behind win.

BIC fell 7-5 to Gosnell. The Lady Mustangs led 5-4 entering the bottom of the fifth but saw the Lady Pirates score three runs in the bottom of the inning to post the victory.

Walnut Ridge scored 10 runs in the first inning and went on to hand BIC an 11-3 defeat.

The Lady Mustangs will return to the field March 26 when they play host to Marmaduke.
