Lady Lions use five run sixth to beat Riverside 11-6
Manila scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a 6-6 tie with Riverside, rallying past the Lady Rebels 11-6 in high school softball action Thursday at Lion Field in Manila.
Riverside took advantage of Manila starter Asten Wallace’s first inning control problems, scoring five runs in the opening inning and grabbing an early 5-0 lead. Wallace gave up four runs and two hits while walking five before being relieved by Sasha Pannells, who worked seven innings, picking up the victory in relief. The Lady Lions began chipping away at the Riverside lead, scoring single runs in the first, second and third innings to cut the Riverside advantage to 5-3. Manila pulled ahead, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 6-5. Riverside answered with a run in the top of the sixth, tying the contest, before Manila’s game winning rally in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Lions out-hit Riverside 8-2. The Lady Rebels committed five errors while Manila had three miscues.
Pannells allowed two unearned runs, struck out eight and walked four while Katie Towery suffered the loss for Riverside. Towery went five plus innings, giving up eight runs, three earned, on seven hits. Towery fanned two and walked two. Anna Mason finished the game, throwing one inning, allowing three runs, one earned. The freshman allowed one hit, struck out two and issued two walks.
Ashlyn Jolly doubled, tripled and scored three times while Pannells had a pair of singles, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Lady Lion offense. Sydney Adcock walloped a run scoring double, Jill Helton doubled and scored a run while Micah Lancaster and Brailey Hampton both lashed singles. Madison Bibbs had an RBI and scored twice while Wallace scored a run and had an RBI.
Carson Smith doubled for Riverside while Whitney Wagganor singled and scored a run. Mason drove in a run and scored once. Haven Robertson and Hannah Shinall both had an RBI, Towery scored twice while Mallory Felton plated a run.
