Junior Lady Mustangs fall in district opener

Buffalo Island Central couldn't get the defensive stops they needed in the fourth quarter as Armorel hit just enough free throws down the stretch to win 38-32 in opening round action of the 1A/2A-10 Junior High District Tournament this past Wednesday in Earle.

The Junior Lady Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 lead scoring three baskets and adding two free throws with 2:28 left in the opening quarter. Kaydence Lambert got BIC on the board with a basket inside to make it 8-2 Armorel. Neither team scored over the last two minutes of the quarter.

Armorel hit a jumper early in the second quarter before Lexi Riley scored back to back basket for the Junior Lady Mustangs. Armorel hit two free throws and got a stick back basket as Lambert hit one of two free throws for BIC to make it 14-7 Junior Lady Tigers with 3:20 left.

Armorel scored a basket inside before BIC scored the last seven points of the quarter as Emma Graddy hit one of two free throws before adding a stick back basket, Riley hit a jumper in the lane as Kystyn Hawkins got a steal and layup to make it 16-14 Armorel at the half.

The Junior Lady Tigers hit one of two free throws and stuck back an offensive rebound before Riley scored inside for BIC. The Junior Lady Tigers scored inside and hit one of two free throws as Haley Milligan hit a jumper in the lane for BIC making it 22-18 Armorel with 1:13 left in the third quarter. The Junior Lady Tigers hit two free throws before Hawkins and Lambert scored back to back baskets for the Junior Lady Mustangs to make the score 24-22 Armorel at the end of three.

Armorel scored a basket early in the quarter as Riley hit one of two free throws and added a jumper in the lane. Armorel hit two free throws, Hawkins hit one of two free throws for BIC only to see Armorel score the next six points to go up 33-26. Graddy canned a three-pointer for the Junior Lady Mustangs, the Junior Lady Tigers hit five of six free throws over the next minute before Graddy canned another three-ball to set the final score at 38-32 Armorel.

Riley had 11 points to lead BIC in scoring as Graddy added nine points. Hawkins and Lambert had five points each as Milligan chipped in two points for the Junior Lady Mustangs.
