Lady Lions battle past Trumann 56-42

Meg Gifford pumped in 19 points to help lead Manila to a 56-42 victory over Trumann in senior girls basketball action Thursday night at Lion Gym. The victory avenged an earlier season 57-51 defeat at the hands of the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Lions jumped to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter and increased their advantage to 34-13 at the half. Manila maintained its 21-point lead through the third quarter, taking a 47-27 margin into the final frame.

Joining Gifford in double figures for Manila was Madison Bibbs with 10 points. Sydney Adcock dropped in nine, Brailey Hampton had eight, Presley Pierce scored five, Andi Baker netted three while Kaitlyn Weathers added two points. The Lady Lions went to the foul stripe 29 times, connecting on 20 attempts. Manila drilled six three pointers.

In the junior high game, Trumann came out on top 40-14. Manila got four points from Ashten Wallace. Anna Grace Adams scored three, Sadie Massey, Annmarie Goff and Kara Watts contributed two points each while Madison Hitchcock chipped in one point.

Manila kicked off the week by playing host to Harrisburg Monday night. The Lady Lions fell 67-48 to the Lady Hornets. Harrisburg raced to a 21-9 lead after the opening stanza and doubled up Manila 36-18 at the half. The Lady Hornets took a 51-28 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Ansley Wixson drilled four three pointers in the first quarter and finished with a game high 26 points to lead Harrisburg. Cassie Armstrong poured in 23 more and pulled down eight rebounds.

Hampton topped Manila with 18 points while Bibbs tallied 10. Gifford scored nine, Adcock had five, Jill Helton netted four while Courtney Merritt pitched in two points.

In the junior high contest, Manila stung the Lady Hornets 38-24. Hitchcock paced the Lions with 15 points while Adams tallied 10. Wallace scored six, Madison Carruth, Sadie McDonald and Madison Whittington all dropped in two points each while Olivia May added one point.

The Lady Lions will return to action Monday night with a road trip to Rivercrest. Manila closes the week traveling to Monette Friday night where they will meet Buffalo Island Central.
