Sipes' big night sparks BIC past EPC

Heather Sipes gunned in 30 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, sparking Buffalo Island Central to a 52-42 win over East Poinsett County in senior girls basketball action Monday night at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette. Sipes also handed out four assists while coming away with four steals. The senior guard scored 10 first period points and 11 more in the fourth quarter. Eighteen of Sipes’ points came from the foul stripe.

Sipes kicked off the game with a long three pointer and BIC never trailed. The Lady Mustangs led 15-5 after the first quarter. The two teams battled on even terms during the second stanza. The Lady Warriors stayed within striking distance, thanks to the long-range shooting of Madison Wiggins, who finished with nine points in the period. The half ended with BIC holding a 29-19 advantage.

BIC stretched its lead to 11 points early in the third quarter, but the Lady Warriors went on an 8-0 run, capped off by Bre Ward’s three pointer to trim the Lady Mustang advantage to 32-27 at the 6:35 mark. Haddyn Hurst knocked down a triple at the 1:50 mark to put BIC ahead 38-29 before Bre Ward closed the quarter with an eight-footer, trimming the Lady Mustangs advantage to 38-31 heading into the final frame.

Sipes and Hurst scored the first four points of the last stanza, pushing BIC’s lead to 11. EPC battled back, scoring six straight points, cutting the Lady Mustang lead to 42-37 with 4:32 remaining. BIC closed the contest out from the foul line, making 12-16 foul shots down the stretch to pick up the win.

Joining Sipes in double figures for BIC was Hurst with 17 points. Morgan James and Vicki Esparza scored two points each while Holly Stockton added one point. The Lady Mustangs stepped to the foul stripe 37 times and knocked down 25. BIC hit three treys.

Tilyeah Ward and Bre Ward paced EPC with 12 and 11 points respectively. The Lady Warriors connected on 8-10 foul shots and drained four three pointers.

In junior high action, EPC slipped past BIC 29-23. Keiagan Gordon led EPC with 16 points. Lexi Riley paced the Lady Mustangs with 10. Emma Graddy scored nine, Mason Hastings tallied two while Haley Milligan and Chareigan Davis added one point each.

BIC traveled to Rector Thursday night and fell 46-39 to the Lady Cougars. Keena Parrish led Rector with 14 points while Mylesa Gant added 12.

Sipes scored a game high 18 points to lead the Lady Mustangs.

In the junior high contest, Rector downed BIC 31-17 behind Madison Wolfenbarger’s 13 points. Lexi Riley topped BIC with 12.

The Lady Mustangs return to action Monday night when they travel to Marked Tree. BIC hosts Rector Thursday night before closing the week with a home game against Manila Friday night at Monette.
