Austin Jones is announcing this week his bid to be the Democratic nominee for Arkansas State Representative for District 54. This district bridges Poinsett and Mississippi County and encompasses the cities of Trumann, Lepanto, Gosnell, Leachville and Manila.

A life-long resident of Trumann, Jones is a 2015 honor graduate of Trumann High School. He is currently enrolled at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro seeking a degree in business administration. In addition to being a full-time college student, Jones also works for Town & Country Industrial Supplies. He is also a member of Healing Hands Community Church in Trumann.

“I am running because I care about this district. I grew up here. I went to school here. I know I can effectively represent my district and work to allocate resources to improve the educational and economic future of District 54,” Jones said.

Jones is poised to represent a new brand of democratic politics in the state. He is one of a host of Democratic candidates who have been inspired to take an active role in politics at a young age.

“I am not a career politician, but we have seen that experience does not always translate into effective governing. I embody youthful energy and passion - two things often missing from state government. District 54 has for too long been neglected by the General Assembly.”

Jones wants to work to defeat the current push for charter and private school vouchers. He believes such measures amount to giving up on public education.

“Investing in our public schools is the first step toward improving our district’s future,” Jones said.

Jones also supports increased emphasis on vocational programs and their potential to improve small communities. His agenda includes increasing accessibility to vocational programs across the district and allowing for more state scholarships for individuals wanting to pursue a vocational certificate. Jones also wants to work closely with city governments to entice larger industries to the district.

“As a State Representative, I will work diligently to ensure this district - my home - gets what it needs to thrive,” Jones said.
