Manila journalism students bring home national awards
Manila Media students Nadia Brown and Veronica Murphy each came home from the JEA/NSPA Fall High School Journalism Convention in Dallas as national award winners. Both students are members of the MHS Voice online newspaper staff.
They competed in the JEA National Write-Off Contest in the photography division. Brown earned an excellent award in the First-Year Photo category. Her entry was a photographic representation of the recent #MeToo posts that have appeared on social media. The judges' comments on her photo included, "You nailed this photo," and "Powerful in black and white. Great photo illustration."
Murphy also won an excellent in the Photo Story category for her series of photos from the Miss Manila pageant. Judges noted, "A wonderful story filled with great exposures and compositions," and "I love the varied use of images and types of shots."
Adviser Tracey Yates Thompson was thrilled with the students' results.
"These young ladies have only been in journalism for a few weeks, so for them to come home with national awards is a tremendous honor," Thompson said. "I look forward to seeing what other great work they produce in the future."
