Brickell and Milligan finish second in Class 3A state tennis doubles

Riversideís Abby Brickell and Hattie Milligan came away with state runner-up honors in the Class 3A State Tennis Tournament held last week at Burns Park in North Little Rock.

The Lady Rebel tandem began tournament play with straight set wins in the first round as well as the quarterfinals. Brickell and Milligan defeated Tori Bradford and Emily Hodge of Clinton 6-2, 6-1, in first round action, before upending Cara Johnson and Maggie Couch of Corning, 6-1, 6-1, in quarterfinal play.

Brickell and Milligan battled from a set down to claim their semifinal match over Lowery West and Jennifer Chen of Episcopal Collegiate, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Brickell and Milligan fell in the finals to Lilly Jackson and Shelby Worsham of Episcopal Collegiate, 6-2, 6-1.

Riversideís Carson Smith and Bailey Fisher battled their way to the semifinals before losing to the eventual champions Jackson and Worsham, 6-0, 6-0. Smith and Fisher won their first-round match with a straight set 6-2, 6-3, victory over Smackoverís Mary Claire Wilcox and Jordon Price. Smith and Fisher banged out a close 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Bergmanís Hannah Edgar and Jess Van Lear in quarterfinal action.

In boys play, Braxton Barnes of Riverside defeated Timothy Hopkins of Prescott, 7-6, 6-2, in first round action. Barnes dropped his quarterfinal match, losing in straight sets to Jonathan Hargraves of Valley Springs, 3-6, 0-6.
