Lady Rebels open with victories over Bay and Armorel

Riverside Lady Rebels opened their 2017 basketball season with a 46-36 victory over the defending Class 1A State Champion Lady Yellowjackets Friday night at Bay.

Riverside fell behind 3-0 but roared back with a 15-0 run, thanks to three pointers by Whitney Wagganor, Brittney Sain and Bailey Fisher. Bay scored the last four points of the quarter to close to within 15-7. The Lady Rebels pushed their lead to double digits in the second period and closed the half with a 28-16 advantage.

Bay mounted a comeback in the third quarter behind the strong play of 6’0” post Kaylee Crain, who scored eight points. The two teams began the fourth period with the Lady Rebels holding a slim 32-28 advantage.

Riverside led by five midway through the fourth quarter until sophomore Lotti Hoffman drained a long three to put the Lady Rebels up by eight, and Bay could never get any closer.

Haven Robertson led Riverside with 15 points while Fisher added 10. Wagganor scored eight, Grace Anne Puckett tallied four, Hoffman and Sain added three points apiece while Carson Smith chipped in two points. Briley Douglas added one point.

In junior high action, Riverside rolled past Bay 47-22. Anna Meurer topped the Lady Rebels with 13 points.

Riverside returned to the hardcourt Friday night and posted an easy 67-13 win over Armorel at Lake City. The Rebels bolted to a 21-2 lead after the first quarter and held a whopping 39-3 halftime advantage. Riverside took a commanding 59-10 advantage into the final frame.

Robertson, who was honored before the game for becoming a 1,000-point career scorer, led Riverside with 13 points. Douglas also hit double digits with 10 points.

In junior high play, Riverside stormed past Armorel 55-23.

In boys action, Armorel defeated Riverside 63-42. The Tigers placed three players in double digits, led by Matt Wyatt’s game high 19 points. Monroe Carr and Weston Hollingshead scored 15 and 10 points respectively. Ethan Cash led Riverside with 16 points.

Riverside turned the tables in the junior high contest, posting a 45-25 win.

The Lady Rebels take a week off before returning to action Monday, Oct. 30, against Marmaduke. Riverside boys will travel to Bay Tuesday night to take on the Yellowjackets.
