Mohawks whitewash Lions 46-0
Piggott used a dominating rushing attack to overpower Manila 46-0 in senior high football action Friday night at Lion Field. The Mohawks rolled up 391 yards total offense, all on the ground, while improving to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in 3A-3 conference play. The loss dropped Manila to 2-5 on the season while their conference mark evened out at 2-2 on the year.
The Mohawks got on the board with 4:17 left in the opening quarter when quarterback Trey Gossett fell across the goal line from one yard out. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
Piggott opened the second quarter with a 10-play, 91-yard scoring march, capped off by John Jonesí 15-yard scamper through the heart of the Lion defense. Hayden Lemmons tacked on the two-point conversion, giving Piggott a 14-0 lead with 7:36 left in the first half.
After a Lion three and out, Piggott struck again when Lemmons barreled in from two yards out. Cade Harrrell ran in the two-point conversion, giving the Mohawks a 22-0 advantage at the 3:20 mark of the second quarter.
Manila put together its lone scoring threat late in the first half as the Lions reached midfield, but time ran out with the Mohawks ahead by 22 points at intermission.
Piggott took advantage of a Lane Sims fumble at the Manila 40 early in the third quarter. Following the turnover, the Mohawks drove the distance, scoring on a four-yard touchdown run by Jones with 6:38 left in the third period. Gunner Shaw added the two-point conversion and the Mohakws led 30-0.
Another Lion turnover gave the ball right back to Piggott, who wasted little time getting into the end zone when Harrell scooted 30 yards for the score. Jonesí two-point run upped the Mohawk lead to 38-0.
Piggott got one last score when Jacob Scott raced in from nine yards out with 6:33 left in the game. Mason Tillman added the two-point play, setting the final score at 46-0.
Lemmons led the Mohawks with eight carries for 85 yards. Jones rushed for 74 yards on eight carries. Harrell picked up 52 yards on five rushes, Shaw had five totes for 51 yards while Gossett ran six times for 46 yards. Lane Buchanan carried four times for 38 yards while Scott rushed twice for 25.
Sims had a good night on the ground for Manila, rushing 20 times for 116 yards. Sims finished three for five through the air for 12 yards. Logan Hamilton had 13 carries for 60 yards while Brett Carter rushed twice for 11 more. Carter, Hamilton and Grant Salzer all caught one pass each. Manila finished with 195 total offense on the night.
The Lions return to action Friday night against 3A-3 conference foe Osceola on the road.
