30th annual Chili Cook-off draws large crowd

A few sprinkles of rain throughout the day did not dampen the enthusiasm of the large crowd gathered in Manila for the 30th annual Manila Lions Chili Cook-off.

Eighteen chili teams competed for top honors with their chili recipes. Nineteen vendor booths set up with everything from baked goods to snocones.

The Manila Business Women served breakfast at the Depot Center during the early morning hours as teams gathered to start their chili cooking and vendors set up their booths.

The Manila Fire Department had a barbecue stand available for the day.

Chili teams included Southern Bancorp, Manila Boy Scouts, 1812 Pizza, Cypress Coffee House, Calvary Baptist Church, Little River Baptist Church, New Providence Baptist Church, Freds, Wilson Dental, Bear State Bank, American Legion, Farmers Bank and Trust, Manila Leo Club, Burch Realty, Silhouettes and three Manila FFA teams.

Winners in the junior division were Chili Commanders, first place; Guys Cooking Chili, second place; and Beano 911, third place.

Bear State Bank won Showmanship trophy and first place for their chili in the senior division.

In the senior division Bear State Bank took first place for chili and showmanship. The American Legion team won second place and Calvary Baptist Church won third place.

This year's People's Choice went to Southern Bancorp.

Entertainment included Judy Hampton, Joe Chipman and Tommy Morries.

Survivor Flight helicopter made a landing during the day giving everyone the opportunity to get a close look at the helicopter.

At the end of the day drawings were held and prizes given away by different organizations and businesses.

Lion Wendell Poteet thanked everyone for participating and said they will be looking forward to next year.

The proceeds from the chili cook-off are used by the Lions for community service including eye glasses and Goodfellow baskets during the holidays.
