New name for established pharmacies
Southern Pharmacy is the new name for six pharmacies owned and operated by Kenny Lomax, and his son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Kass Lomax.
Monette Discount Drug was the first in the family business and was established in 1974 by Kenny Lomax.
Kyle said he grew up in the business and followed in his dad's career choice.
“I like to work, I like what I do, I like helping patients, and I like working with the employees,” Kyle said.
The six locations making up Southern Pharmacy are Monette Discount Drug, Plaza Pharmacy in Jonesboro, Leachville Discount Drug, Lepanto Discount Drug, Riverside Pharmacy in Lake City, and the newest store purchased in September is Nyal Pharmacy in Marked Tree.
The name is changed but Kyle and Kass agree the family business atmosphere will remain the same.
Choosing the right name for all of the businesses has been a process.
Southern Pharmacy seems to reflect on the values and heritage of the businesses.
“We needed one name to group all of our locations together,” Kyle said.
Kass said once their patients are in the computer system it is linked to all of the locations. A person can have his/her prescriptions filled first in Jonesboro and it will be in the system at all of the other Southern Pharmacy locations. Two locations, Monette and Jonesboro, are open on Saturdays. Phone calls are rolled over and patients can get their prescriptions filled at either if needed.
Both Kyle and Kass are graduates of UAMS School of Pharmacy. Kass graduated in 2000 and Kyle in 2002.
Kass joined the family business seven years ago. She had worked as pharmacist in a hospital and managed medications for area nursing homes.
She works mostly at the Jonesboro location. Kyle oversees the different locations and both are ready to work where they are needed.
Derek Elder of Jonesboro is their logistic coordinator. He makes daily deliveries and helps maintain the inventory and supplies at each location.
“The reason all of this works is we have very good employees,” Kyle said. “Most have been with us for 10 to 25 years.”
Presently Southern Pharmacy has 25 pharmacists and technicians on staff.
The name has changed but the people and friendly, helpful service will remain the same.
“We want our customers throughout the region to be able to recognize us no matter where they are,” Kyle said. “We are proud to be a part of each community we serve and look forward to serving our customers for many years to come.”
