The recipients of the third annual Howard Reeves Memorial Golf Scholarships were announced last week. Trey DePriest, Buffalo Island Central graduate; Leah McBroom, Greene County Tech graduate; Dax Hurst, BIC graduate; and Mallory Stracener, Batesville.

Mr. Reeves' widow, Suda Reeves, daughter Sue Steed, and grandson Michael Stracener congratulated the young people and presented each with an $800 scholarship.

The memorial golf tournament is held at Turkey Mountain Country Club in Horseshoe Bend. It was held this year June 3-4.

Mr. Reeves, a longtime Monette businessman, was an avid golfer and loved playing at Big Lake Country Club. He was an honorary lifetime member of the club. He passed away in 2015. The golf tournament held in his memory provides young athletes scholarships.

“We want to give a special thanks to the local golfers, Scott Gifford and Tony Hawkins, for their help, and all of our sponsors that help make this a successful tournament,” Stracener said.

He encourages anyone who would like to participate in next year's tournament to join them.

Trey, Leah and Dax thanked the family for the scholarship.

“I feel honored to be chosen,” Leah said.

Leah is pursuing a career in nursing; Dax plans to attend Arkansas State University going into pre-med, and Trey will be attending Henderson State University where he will be studying psychology and playing college golf.
