A Tuesday morning explosion in Monette claimed the life of one (Jamie Lisk) and injured a Craighead County deputy (Garland Tipton).

Monette Fire Department answered the call at approximately 9:21 a.m. Tuesday, July 25. A shed behind a home on the 500 block of Virginia Street had exploded.

Eastern District Deputy Sheriff Garland Tipton was answering a welfare check call made by Mr. Lisk's wife.

Lisk, who had been hired recently by the city of Monette to mow the cemetery, had locked himself in the shed.

Deputy Tipton said he knocked on the door of the shed in an attempt to make contact with Lisk just before the explosion occured. Tipton was blown four feet across the yard and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a Jonesboro hospital, treated and released.

Lisk, 43, was transported to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. A morning fog prevented Lisk from being air lifted. Lisk later died from injuries sustained from the explosion.

Monette Chief of Police Brian Carmichael said the explosion is under investigation by the Arkansas State Fire Marshal's office. The source of the expolosion should be known in a couple of weeks.
