Leachville to seek mayor candidates
Leachville will be seeking mayoral candidates due to the death of Mayor Ralph Wells on May 25. Mayor Wells had served two and a half years of a four year term. He had served on the Leachville city council for two years and as mayor of Leachville for 28 years.
In a special called meeting in May, the council elected Councilwoman Lisa Baldridge to serve in the absence of the mayor. She will continue to serve as interim mayor until the position is filled.
Ruth Ann Keith, city clerk, said a special meeting was held Monday, June 5, for the council to pass a resolution declaring a vacancy for the mayor's position and then proceed toward the steps of a special election.
The council hopes to have a special election in October to fill position of mayor.
Keith said anyone wishing to run for mayor will need to pick up signature forms and gather the required number of registered voter signatures and file the paperwork at the county clerk's office. The forms will be available at Leachville City Hall.
Keith also said any council member who wishes to seek the position of mayor can run and continue to serve on the council. If elected, he or she will need to resign the council seat and the council can appoint a replacement.
“We are also looking for applications for certified police officers,” Keith said. “The council is looking to hire an officer in charge. We appreciate County Sheriff Dale Cook and his deputies for their assistance during this time as the department is rebuilt. We have one member who will be going to the academy soon, and we have good part-time officers. With our part-time officers and county deputies our town is being watched over well.”
