Stone receives Don Ellison memorial scholarship
Gavin Stone, Riverside senior athlete, is the recipient of the first Don Ellison Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is open to all NEA senior basketball players. Stone is an outstanding athlete and participated in basketball, baseball, tennis, bowling and golf.
The family of Don Ellison presented the award at the Riverside High School Sports Awards night on Tuesday, May 23.
Presenting the award on behalf of his family was Ryan Fletcher with NEA Sports Magazine.
“It is an honor to present this scholarship in honor of my grandfather who passed away in 2016,” Ryan said. “He was a Nettleton graduate, loved basketball and was on the first Nettleton team to win the NEA Tournament. His grandson, Tyler Timms, was on the first Riverside High School team to win the NEA Tournament. I believe it is befitting that the first scholarship winner goes to a Riverside graduate.”
“My grandfather was a committed Razorback fan and loved Northeast Arkansas sports,” Ryan said. “He was a successful hardworking man who loved Jesus. We had many applicants, but Gavin is the one that we believe sets a precedent for this award. He, like my grandfather, has completed many accomplishments yet has remained humble through it all. That’s a testament to his parents and coaches. He’s been led by Buster Campbell who has coached many great players like Gavin over the years. Buster teaches showing respect, remaining humble, and being a leader. Gavin is another great product of Coach Campbell’s program.”
Family members attending the presentation were Mr. Ellison's wife, Anita Ellison, his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Trent Fletcher.
