Manila punches state tournament ticket

Brett Sweatman walloped two homeruns, including a mammoth shot over the right centerfield fence, and combined with the strong pitching performance of Michael Jorgensen, led Manila to an 8-0 shutout victory over Valley Springs in Saturday’s 3A Regional Tournament at Lion Field. The victory sends the host Lions to this week’s state tournament Thursday at Harrison, and sets up a semifinal regional matchup with Riverside at 12:30 Monday afternoon.

The two squads battled to a scoreless tie entering the top of the third inning. Brady Clark’s RBI double put Manila on top 1-0 before Sweatman followed with a long two-run blast, giving the Lions a 3-0 edge. Manila tacked on another run in the fifth before putting the game away with a four-run sixth inning which included Sweatman’s second homer of the day.

Jorgensen was dominant, pitching seven innings, striking out eight while giving up only two hits. Sweatman was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two homers, a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Brock Birmingham went 3-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Clark finished 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Abraham Lopez singled in a run, Jeremiah Perez singled and scored once while Anthony Lopez crossed the plate once.
