A great physician, Dr. Dennis Parten, 62, of Jonesboro was called home by The Great Physician in Heaven on Sunday, April 30, 2017. He was born in Jonesboro on March 26, 1955 to Bill and Inez Parten.

Dennis graduated from Monette High School in 1973 and attended college at Arkansas State University. He taught chemistry and biology and coached the softball and baseball teams at Monette High School for one year before attending medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Dennis then began his residency at AHEC at St. Bernard’s where he met his wife, Jeresa. After residency, he had his own medical practice in Monette for many years.

Dennis loved the outdoors; he was an avid hunter and fisher and enjoyed sharing those moments with his children, Barrett and Olivia. He was a Scout Master for the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America. Dennis enjoyed all sports but was an avid baseball fan. He had many interests and hobbies but above all else he was a man of God and was of the Church of Christ belief.

Dennis is preceded in death by his father, Bill Parten; brother, Steven Mark Parten; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Parten and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pace.

Dennis leaves behind his wife of 29 years, Jeresa Parten of Jonesboro; son, Barrett Parten and fiancee Brooke Kay of Memphis; daughter, Olivia Johnson of Jonesboro; mother, Inez Parten of Jonesboro; and best friend and mentor, Junior “Red” Palmer.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Emerson Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Palmer and Bro. Jimmy King officiating. Burial will follow at Monette Cemetery with the active pallbearers being Gary Pace, Dave Parten, Michael Mangum, Paul Masters, Dr. Darrell Ragland, Dr. Randy Spurgin, Dr. Kenny Tidwell, and Robb Whelchel. Honorary pallbearers include Henry Turner, Jason Chandler, Bubba Grimmer, Ron Heard, Jeff Gregory, Dr. Mark Newman, John Aycock, Dr. Scot Snodgrass.

The visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, at Forrest Home Church of the Nazarene in Jonesboro. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Paragould Children’s Home, 505 S. 2nd Ave., Paragould, AR 72450 or the St. Bernard’s Foundation Scholarship Fund, 400 East St., Jonesboro, AR 72401.
