Lady Rebels clip Marked Tree, fall to Westside and Brookland
Riverside played three games in high school softball last week, defeating Marked Tree 8-2 Monday on the road before losing a 16-11 slugfest to Westside Tuesday and closing the week with a 15-0 loss Thursday at Brookland.
Riverside held a precarious 3-2 lead over Marked Tree before scoring three times in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to earn the six-run victory. Bailey Fisher was the hitting star for Riverside, belting a pair of doubles and a single while driving in two runs and scoring twice. Carson Smith added a pair of singles and two runs scored. Grace Ann Puckett and McKenna Beach cracked run scoring doubles while scoring a run apiece. Mallory Felton had an RBI single and a run scored while Whitney Wagganer delivered an RBI hit. Delaney George scored a run for the Lady Rebels.
Katie Towery picked up the win on the mound, going the distance, allowing just four hits and two runs. Towery fanned 11 Lady Indians while walking four.
Against Westside, Riverside jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Lady Warriors scored nine unanswered runs and went on to post the victory over the Lady Rebels. The two teams combined for 18 walks, with 12 being issued to Riverside and six to the Lady Warriors.
Offensively, Puckett was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, driving in four runs for the Lady Rebels. Felton laced a two-run single while Brianna Campbell also had a base hit. Towery scored four runs while George, Smith, Fisher, Beach, Carmen Campbell, Briley Douglas and Hannah Shinall all crossed the plate once.
Towery pitched seven innings and took the loss, surrendering seven hits and 16 runs, only six of which were earned.
Brookland scored in every frame of its 15-0, four-inning victory over Riverside. The Lady Bearcats put three on the board in the first inning and tacked on two more in the second before exploding for a seven-run third inning. Brookland added three more in the fourth to close out the win. The Lady Bearcats banged out 11 hits, including Caitlyn McClain’s two-run bomb. Jacy Harris had a pair of hits and three RBI while Lexi Talley also had two singles. Ashlyn Matthews threw a one-hit shutout, striking out eight to pick up the win.
Towery suffered the loss for the Lady Rebels, giving up 11 hits and 11 earned runs. Smith had Riverside’s only base hit while also stealing a base.
Riverside returns to the diamond Monday when they play host to Bay in the regular season finale. The Lady Rebels begin district tournament play Tuesday at Corning, taking on Hoxie with a 3:30 start time.
