Lady Lions endure tough week
Manila fell three times in high school softball action last week. The Lady Lions lost 17-7 Monday at Walnut Ridge and dropped an 8-7 decision Wednesday at Gosnell before being shutout 5-0 at the hands of Armorel Friday at Lion Field.
Manila held a 2-1 lead over the Lady Bobcats before watching Walnut Ridge score seven times in the second inning to grab an 8-2 lead. Manila came back with four runs in the top of the third to cut the deficit to two, but the Lady Bobcats answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning and went on to the 10-run victory.
Tessa Pannells took the loss, working 3 1/3 innings, allowing 14 runs, seven earned. Pannells gave up nine hits, struck out two and issued nine base on balls. Sasha Pannells pitched an inning, giving up three runs on four hits. Ashley Rothwell had three hits and scored a run while Jill Helton clubbed a double and a triple, had an RBI and scored once. Sasha Pannells doubled and tripled while scoring two runs. Hannah Teague ripped a two-run double and scored once while Madison Bibbs, Ashlynn Jolly and Ali Smith all had RBI singles, with Bibbs and Jolly both scoring a run apiece. Taylor Hampton added a single.
The Lady Lions built a 7-5 lead entering the seventh inning in Wednesday's game at Gosnell, but the Lady Pirates pushed across three runs in the bottom of the frame to pull out a come from behind 8-7 victory. Tessa Pannells worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while absorbing the loss. Pannells walked seven and fanned two. Teague singled, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Manila offense. Bibbs and Rothwell both singled twice, had an RBI and scored one run each. Sasha Pannells singled and scored three times while Smith doubled in a run. Hampton had an RBI single while Tessa Pannells doubled and scored. Jolly singled and scored once while Helton added a base hit.
Armorel limited Manila to just four hits in their 5-0 whitewash of Manila Friday. Jordyn Wheeler went the distance and took the loss, giving up five runs on 14 hits. Hampton singled twice while Sasha Pannells doubled and Rothwell singled.
Manila returns to action Monday at East Poinsett County. The Lady Lions host Trumann Tuesday, travel to Rivercrest Thursday before closing the week with a home game Friday against Piggott.
