Bay nips BIC 5-4 on bases loaded walk

Bay's Taylor Layne drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to help lift the Yellowjackets to a 5-4 come from behind victory over Buffalo Island Central Wednesday afternoon at Bay.

The Mustangs broke a 3-3 tie, scoring a run in the top of the seventh, before the Yellowjackets answered with their winning rally in the bottom of the inning. Bay scored the tying run on a throwing error and pushed across the game winner after three consecutive walks.

Nolan Smith, who belted a solo homer for Bay, earned the victory in relief, pitching two innings of three hit baseball. Smith allowed one run while fanning four and walking two. Layne went the first five innings for the Yellowjackets, giving up seven hits and one earned run while striking out seven.

Andrew McFarlin pitched six 1/3 innings in a losing effort for the Mustangs. The junior righthander gave up five hits and four earned runs, walked three and struck out three.

Logan Harrison delivered a pair of RBI singles and scored twice to pace the BIC offense. Chayse Carmichael also had a pair of hits, drove in a run and scored once. Kyle Thrasher cracked three singles, Canon Walling belted an RBI single while Kaleb Dublin and Cory Turner also had hits.

BIC will travel to Armorel Tuesday before visiting Riverside on Wednesday. The Mustangs go to Marked Tree Thursday before closing the week against Cross County Friday at Monette.

Lady Mustangs split double-header

In softball action, BIC split a doubleheader with Bay, winning the opener 3-2 before dropping the nightcap 11-10. The Lady Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead after the first inning in the opener, but the Lady Mustangs pecked away, scoring single runs in the second and third to even things up. BIC plated the game winner in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Holly Stockton went 3-3 and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Lady Mustang offense. Jealynn Cates added an RBI single. Lexi Ray went the distance, striking out five Lady 'Jackets to earn the win.

In the nightcap, Mallory Hartley homered, singled and drove in three runs to lead the Lady Yellowjackets to the one run victory. Anne Marie Wood had a pair of hits and two RBI while Jessie Martin added a two-run single.

Heather Sipes had a pair of hits and three RBI for BIC while Stockton singled twice and drove in a run.

The Lady Mustangs will play host to Manila Monday before entertaining Cedar Ridge on Tuesday. BIC will travel to Marked Tree for a Thursday afternoon matchup.
