Lady Lions claim runner-up finish in Cougar Slam

Manila's Lady Lions completed a busy week with a runner-up finish in the Cougar Slam Saturday at Izard County. Manila started the week with a 7-6 victory at Marked Tree on Monday. The Lady Lions rolled over Osceola in a doubleheader sweep Tuesday at home, winning the first game 13-0 and the nightcap 19-0. Manila hosted East Poinsett County on Thursday and fell 12-2 to the Lady Warriors. The Lady Lions visited Armorel Friday and came away with a 5-4 win over the Lady Tigers. Manila began the Cougar Slam, squeezing past Flippin 4-3. In the semifinals, the Lady Lions downed Melbourne 6-3 before losing the championship game to host Izard County 12-1.

In Monday's win at Marked Tree, Tessa Pannells was the winning pitcher, going the distance, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. Pannells fanned seven and walked four. Madison Bibbs singled, tripled, drove in two and scored a run to lead the Manila offense. Pannells singled twice, drove in a run and scored once while Ashley Rothwell singled, doubled and cross the plate twice. Hannah Teague delivered an RBI hit, Ali Smith rapped a pair of singles while Beth Rawson cracked a base hit. Ashlyn Jolly and Amy Adams both scored runs. The two teams entered the seventh inning with Manila holding a 6-4 edge. The Lady Indians plated two runs to tie the game, but the Lady Lions scored a run in the bottom of the inning to claim the victory.

Everyone got into the action in Manila's doubleheader sweep of Osceola. In the opener, Sasha Pannells pitched a three-inning no-hitter while striking out nine to pick up the win. Amber Gonzalez had a pair of base hits, three RBI and scored three times while Sydney Adcock rapped out three hits and scored a run to lead the Lady Lion offense. Hannah May singled, doubled, drove in a pair and scored a run. Kaitlyn Weathers rapped an RBI single and scored once while Madison Mullen singled and scored a pair of runs. Rawson and Grace Wilkins both singled. Wilkins, Adams, Presley Pierce and Kayla Parker all crossed the plate once.

In the nightcap, Tessa Pannells matched her sister, firing a three-inning no-hitter while striking out eight batters. Tessa Pannells contributed to her own cause by singling twice and blasting a double while driving in four runs and scoring twice. Jolly had a pair of base hits with an RBI and a run scored. Weathers also singled twice, drove in a run and crossed the plate once. Rothwell belted a two-run double and scored twice while Adams and Jill Helton both raked RBI singles. May cracked a two-run double, Bibbs singled and scored three runs while Mullen had a base hit. Taylor Hampton drove in a run and scored twice while Teague and Smith both scored runs.

EPC tallied six runs in the first two innings and went on to defeat Manila 12-2 on Thursday. Tessa Pannells absorbed the loss, going six innings, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits. Pannells fanned five and didn't issue a walk. Bibbs doubled in a pair of runs for the Lady Lions while Sasha Pannells singled, doubled and scored a run. Smith doubled and scored once while Tessa Pannells had a single.

Manila slipped past Armorel on Friday by scoring two runs in the sixth and three more in the fifth to erase a 3-0 deficit. Sasha Pannells went the distance to earn the win, allowing four runs, none of which were earned. Pannells scattered eight hits while striking out three. Bibbs cracked a pair of two run singles. Sasha Pannells and Rothwell both singled twice and scored a run apiece. Smith had an RBI single and scored a run while Helton doubled. Hampton and Teague both delivered base hits.

In the quarterfinals of the Cougar Slam, Tessa Pannells and Teague both had perfect days at the plate in the one-run win over Flippin. Pannells went 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Teague was 2-2 with an RBI. Sasha Pannells had an RBI single while Smith, Bibbs, Hampton, Jolly and Helton all had base hits. Sasha Pannells earned the victory in relief. Pannells came on in the second inning and allowed just one hit and no runs the rest of the way while striking out five.

Tessa Pannells got the win in Manila's 6-3 victory over Melbourne in the semifinals of the Cougar Slam. Pannells pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on three hits. Bibbs went 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Rothwell was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Teague and Sasha Pannells both had RBI singles while Smith also contributed a base hit.

Sasha Pannells suffered the loss in the championship game against ICC. Pannells pitched five innings, allowing 11 hits and 10 earned runs. Bibbs was 3-3, Hampton went 2-2 while Adcock had a 1-1 day. Sasha Pannells cracked an RBI single, Rothwell had a pair of base hits, Helton singled and scored a run while Jordyn Wheeler contributed a base hit.

The Lady Lions will visit Buffalo Island Central Monday before playing host to Riverside Tuesday.
