Rebels, Lady Rebels begin diamond season with wins
Riverside completed its first week of baseball action with a pair of wins and a tie. The Rebels opened the season by hammering Corning 10-1 Tuesday afternoon on the road. Riverside battled Manila to a 2-2 stalemate Thursday at Lake City in a game that was called due to darkness. The Rebels finished the week with a 4-0 shutout victory over East Poinsett County Friday afternoon at Lepanto.
Larry Tilley blasted a two-run homer in the first inning of Riverside's win over the Warriors. Tilley completed the day with two hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Dillon Turner earned the victory, working four innings of shutout ball, striking out three batters.
Riverside returns to the diamond with road trips Monday and Tuesday afternoons at Trumann and Osceola respectively. The Rebels will play host to the Seminoles in a return game Thursday at Lake City before ending the week with a home game Friday against perennial 1A power Armorel.
The Lady Rebel soft-ballers got their season started with an 11-10 victory over Marked Tree Monday at Lake City. Mallory Felton scored the game winning run on a walk-off error in the bottom of the sixth inning in a contest that was shortened by darkness.
Riverside scored two runs in the second inning to grab a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Indians evened the game with two runs in the top of the third. Riverside answered with a two-spot in their half of the frame to go ahead 4-2. After Marked Tree closed to within 4-3 with a run in the top of the fourth, the Lady Rebels plated four runs in the bottom of the inning to take what appeared to be a commanding 8-3 lead. Marked Tree stormed back, scoring six runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 9-8 edge. The Lady Rebels, undeterred, scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go back on top, 10-9. Marked Tree evened the game, plating a run in the top of the sixth, but Riverside scored the game winner on a Lady Indian error, securing the victory.
Felton banged out three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice to pace the Lady Rebel offensive attack. Grace Anne Puckett also had three hits and an RBI. Katie Towery singled, doubled, drove in a pair of runs and crossed the plate once. Becca Campbell belted a two-run double and scored a run. Bailey Fisher singled and scored twice, Carson Smith clubbed an RBI single, scored twice and stole a base while Hannah Shinall and Carmen Campbell both singled and scored one run each.
Towery went the distance on the mound for Riverside, earning the victory. Towery pitched six innings, allowing 10 runs, six earned, eight hits, five strikeouts and three walks.
Riverside dropped a 19-6 decision to Harrisburg Tuesday at Lake City. The Lady Hornets held a 6-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth before the Lady Rebels got on the board with a pair of runs. Harrisburg held a 9-6 advantage heading into the top of the seventh before scoring nine times to put the game out of reach.
Felton and Puckett slammed homeruns to highlight the Rebel offense on the day, with both players scoring once and adding RBIs. Fisher doubled while McKenna Beach and Becca Campbell both singled and scored one run. Towery doubled, stole a base and scored once while Delaney George drove in a pair of runs. Shinall crossed the plate one time.
Towery worked six and 1/3 innings, allowing 16 runs, nine of which were earned. The right hander gave up 15 hits, walked four and fanned four. Fisher pitched two thirds of an inning, giving up three runs, one earned. Fisher surrendered two hits while walking one and striking out one.
The Lady Rebels clobbered Osceola 21-0 Thursday at Lake City in a three-inning game. Towery pitched three perfect innings, striking out nine Lady Seminoles. Riverside scored 16 runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Puckett belted a pair of doubles, drove in two runs and scored twice. Whitney Waggonor had a run scoring single, scored twice and stole a base. Smith singled in a run and had a stolen base. Fisher clubbed an RBI double, scored twice and stole two bases. Kylie Huth singled, drove in three runs and crossed the plate once. Cayci Daniels had a two-run single and scored a pair of runs. Carmen Campbell had an RBI single and scored three runs. Morgan Booth singled in a run and crossed the plate once. Towery scored twice and had an RBI. Briley Douglas had an RBI, George scored once and stole a base while Ashlynn Wright scored one run.
Riverside dropped a 12-2 decision to Armorel Friday at Lake City. The Lady Tigers scored three runs in the first before tacking on five in the fourth and three more in the fifth to gain the victory.
Towery suffered the loss, going five innings, allowing 12 runs, five earned. Towery gave up nine hits, issued three base on balls and struck out eight Lady Tigers.
Fisher doubled in a run and scored once, George laced three singles, scored a run and stole a base while Puckett doubled and Towery singled. Shinall drove in one run.
The Lady Rebels will travel to Osceola Tuesday afternoon before playing host to Manila Thursday afternoon at Lake City.
