Leachville landmark hit by fire

The stage area of the Melody received the most fire damage.

Moba Lee Miller, Melody Theater committee member, could not hold back a few tears as she inspected the fire damage to the theater, a Leachville landmark.

A fire broke out early Wednesday morning about 4 a.m. at the back of the theater during storms that caused damage across Buffalo Island. Lightning is suspected to be the cause of the fire.

The fire damaged the stage and the ceiling in the back of the theater. The entire theater sustained smoke damage.

"We are proud of our firefighters," Miller said. "I have heard they did a great job putting out the fire."

Leachville firefighters worked to contain the fire to the back of the building.

Robert Clowers kept a watchful eye on the fire throughout the day to make sure it did not restart.

A show was scheduled for Friday night and it was moved to the old Leachville gym.

Miller said she had worked on the yearly schedule for the theater the night before and was making plans with Jill Sanders, BIC EAST facilitator, to display the upcoming attractions and creating a brag window in the covered displays on the front of the theater. Miller said the EAST students did an excellent job creating the posters for the city's centennial celebration.

"There has been so much work and love go into restoring the theater," Miller said. "Work has been done on getting it listed in the Historic Places, I certainly hope it can be restored once again. It holds a lot of memories."
