BIC falls to Earle in regional tournament opener

Buffalo Island Central (10-18) played Earle close in the first half before the Mustangs' six point output in the third quarter let the Bulldogs pull away on their way to a 73-41 win in the opening round of the 2A North Regional tournament this past Wednesday in Carlisle.

Earle got on the board first before Trey DePriest hit one of two free throws followed by an inside basket from Cory Turner to make it 3-2 BIC. The Bulldogs hit a jumper, DePriest scored inside for BIC, Earle got a stick back as DePriest got a steal and lay-up to make it 7-6 Mustangs with 4:27 left.

The Bulldogs got back to back scores, Chayse Carmichael hit a jumper for the Mustangs before the Bulldogs got a jumper to make it 12-9 Earle. Andrew McFarlin and DePriest scored back to back baskets to make the score 13-12 BIC as the Bulldogs hit one of two free throws to tie it at 13. Miles Gifford canned a three-pointer for the Mustangs late in the quarter to make the score 16-13 BIC at the end of one.

The Bulldogs drilled back to back three-pointers to open the second quarter to go up 19-16 only to see DePriest net a three-ball for BIC to tie the game at 19. Earle scored the next five points as McFarlin got a stick back for the Mustangs to make it 24-21 Bulldogs with 3:14 left. Earle scored inside, BIC got a jumper from McFarlin, the Bulldogs scored off the break as McFarlin hit one of two free throws for the Mustangs to make it 28-24 Earle. The Bulldogs added a score late to take a 30-24 at the half.

McFarlin hit two free throws for BIC to open the third quarter as Earle made back to back baskets to make the score 34-26 Bulldogs. Turner scored inside for the Mustangs, the Bulldogs got a score down low, Turner got a basket in the paint for BIC to make it 36-30 as Earle ended the quarter on a 16-0 run to make it 52-30 Bulldogs at the end of three.

Earle scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter as Miles Gifford hit a three-pointer for BIC to make it 56-33 Bulldogs. Earle hit one of two free throws, DePriest hit one of two free throws for the Mustangs, Earle scored inside before DePriest hit a jumper for BIC to make it 59-37 Bulldogs.

Earle scored the next six points as DePriest hit a three-pointer for the Mustangs making the score 65-40 Bulldogs with 2:50 left. Earle scored inside and off a dunk before Turner hit one of two technical free throws to make the score 69-41 Bulldogs. Earle added two more scores to set the final score at 73-41 Earle.

"Earle is a good team. When they can shoot the three to go along with their inside game they are a tough team to beat," BIC head coach Mike Scutero said. "We didn't play a complete game. You have to play 32 minutes when you get this far in the season and we didn't do that," Scutero added.

DePriest scored 17 points to lead BIC with McFarlin adding nine points. Turner and Gifford scored seven and six points respectively as Carmichael chipped in two points.
