Junior Mustangs fall in district championship

In a tale of two halves, Buffalo Island Central (21-7) held Earle to five points in the first half of district play. The second half saw the Junior Bulldogs' offense hit on all cylinders they outscored the Junior Mustangs 39-22 in the second half to post a 44-36 win this past Saturday in the 1A/2A-10 junior boys championship game in Marked Tree.

Jesse Fry got BIC on the board with a basket inside as JG Edwards got a steal and lay-up for the Junior Mustangs to make it 4-0 BIC with 3:20 left. Earle hit a jumper before Fry got inside for another BIC basket to make it 6-2 Junior Mustangs at the end of the first quarter.

BIC scored the first six points of the second quarter as Fry and Drake Mitchell got back to back fast break lay-ups with Mitchell hitting one of two free throws to make the score 11-2 Junior Mustangs. Earle hit one of two free throws before Fry got a basket in the paint and added one of two free throws making it 14-3 with 26 seconds left. Earle got a stick back basket before the quarter ended to make it 14-5 BIC at the half.

Earle went on a 17-1 run to start the third quarter with Fry hitting one of two free throws for BIC's only point during the run as Earle took a 22-15 lead with 2:22 left. Tate Schooley hit two free throws for the Junior Mustangs, Earle hit one of two free throws and scored inside as Edwards hit one of two technical free throws to make it 25-18 Earle. Fry hit two free throws, Earle got a basket inside, Mitchell hit two free throws for BIC, the Junior Bulldogs scored inside before Edwards hit two free throws for the Junior Mustangs making it 29-24 Earle. The Junior Bulldogs got a basket off the fast break as Fry hit a jumper for BIC to make the score 31-26 Earle at the end of three quarters of play.

BIC got a steal and lay-up from Juan Gomez and one of two free throws from Schooley to make it 31-29 as Earle got a fast break basket to make it 33-29 Junior Bulldogs. Mitchell netted two free throws for BIC before Earle scored the next eight points to go up 41-31 with 3:02 left. Mitchell scored inside for the Junior Mustangs as Schooley hit one of two free throws for the Junior Mustangs to make the score 41-34 Earle. Fry got a stick back basket for BIC as Earle hit three of four free throws in the last 29 seconds to make the final score 44-36.

The BIC Junior Mustangs finished as conference and district runner-up for this past basketball season. BIC lost to Earle in the district finals.

Fry scored 16 points to lead BIC as Mitchell tossed in nine points. Edwards finished with five points, Schooley netted four points with Gomez adding two points.

Fry, Mitchell, Edwards and Schooley were all selected to the all-conference team.
