Mustangs gain revenge on Yellowjackets
Buffalo Island Central came out on fire and galloped past Bay 66-57 in senior boys basketball action Tuesday night at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette.
Canon Walling and Trey DePriest got the Mustangs off to a quick start, draining two three pointers apiece in the opening quarter as BIC built a 26-18 lead after the opening stanza.
The Mustangs increased their lead to 40-26 on a Walling lay-in late in the first period, but the Yellowjackets fought back, scoring the last six points of the half, capped off by Dustin Utley's three-point play with three seconds remaining to slice the BIC lead to single digits, 40-32.
Bay came out of the dressing room at intermission and scored the first eight points of the third quarter to cap off a 14-0 run, tying the game on Taylor Layne's three-point play at the 4:44 mark. DePriest answered by popping a triple from beyond the top of the key to put BIC back on top. But the 'Jackets got four consecutive free throws from Layne and Caleb Hartgen to take their first and only lead of the game, 46-45, with 2:27 left in the third quarter. Chayse Carmichael put BIC back on top with a driving bucket at the 33 second mark, and Walling closed out the period with his third trey of the game, giving the Mustangs a 50-46 lead heading into the final frame.
An Utley basket with 6:12 left sliced the Mustang lead to 52-49, but that was as close as Bay would get. Blaine Wildy and Andrew McFarlin threw in a pair of two pointers, and Walling followed with another trey to push the BIC lead to eight with just 2:33 remaining. DePriest's three-point play seconds later closed out any chance for a Yellowjacket comeback as the Mustangs sealed the victory and gained revenge on an earlier loss at Bay.
DePriest scored a game high 25 points to lead BIC while Walling also hit double figures with 16. McFarlin and Carmichael chipped in nine points each. Miles Gifford tallied five while Wildy added two. BIC made 4-9 foul shots and drilled nine three pointers.
Layne and Utley led Bay with 21 and 19 points respectively. The 'Jackets canned 14-21 charity tosses and made four three pointers.
In junior high action, Bay slipped past BIC 32-30. Aaron Jolly led the Yellowjackets with 12 points. Jesse Fry topped the Mustangs with 13 points while John Garrett Edwards netted nine. Drake Mitchell scored four, Tate Schooley had three while Juan Gomez added one point.
BIC fell at Armorel Friday night, 74-59. Logan Blankenship led the Tigers with 20 points while McFarlin paced BIC with 21.
BIC stampeded Armorel 49-17 in the junior high contest. Edwards buried five three pointers and finished with a game high 17 points to pace the Mustangs while Mitchell chipped in 11 more.
BIC will return to the hardcourt Friday night when they play host to the Earle Bulldogs.
