Leachville blood drive dedicated to Betty Oates

The Dec. 19 Red Cross blood drive held in Leachville was dedicated to Betty Oates for the years she volunteered to serve homemade cookies and popcorn balls to the blood donors. Pictured with Mrs. Oates is David Thompson, team supervisor with the American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross blood drive held last week at the First Baptist Church in Leachville was dedicated to Betty Oates. Mrs. Oates is a longtime volunteer with blood drives held in Leachville. She started volunteering when she was a member of the Home Demonstration Club in the early 1990s.

When the present First Baptist Church was built, the drive was moved to the fellowship hall.

Mrs. Oates has a reputation for her homemade cookies and popcorn balls she serves to the workers and blood donors.

Over the last year Mrs. Oates had to step back as she recuperated from surgery and underwent chemotherapy. She was declared cancer free the first of December.

She arrived last Monday afternoon with her goodies declaring, "I'm back, doing great, and cancer free." She had made several dozen chocolate chip cookies, a fresh apple cake, and 100 popcorn balls to serve during the blood drive.
