Brothers sign with CBC

Brothers, Brett Sweatnam and Joey Johnson, were excited to be able to combine their signing day at Manila High School on Thursday, Dec. 8. Brett, a senior at Manila High School, and Joey, a sophomore at Dyersburg Community College, will be joining their baseball skills next year to play for Central Baptist College (CBC).

Brett and Joey signed letters of intent to continue their baseball careers at CBC.

Teammates, coaches, and family members were on hand for the signing in the MHS auditorium. The signing was followed with a reception giving everyone a chance to congratulate the brothers.

Brett and Joey are the sons of Sonny and Patricia Swetnam.

Brett has played his high school years at Manila. Joey is a 2010 graduate of Blytheville High School.

Brett is a pitcher and plays third base for the Manila Lions. Joey is a pitcher and center fielder at Dyersburg College.

Brett said CBC is a nice fit for him and he calls it a bonus to be able to play with his older brother.

Both agree CBC is a nice school with great coaches with a winning program.

"It is a family environment," Joey said "Within 20 minutes of our visit we felt at home."

Manila baseball coach Jason Crane congratulated both young men.

"It is a big day for the brothers to sign to play baseball together," Coach Crane.

CBC head baseball coach Aaron Brister and assistant baseball coach Frank Lee, recruiter, were on hand for the signing ceremony.

Coach Brister said this was the fourth set of brother signing for CBC. Coach Brister has been head coach for four years and with the college for 12.

Coach Brister said they were excited to sign the brothers. He praised Manila School, coaches, and the community.

"We represent our school and we represent God the best way we can," Coach Brister said. "We broke the school record last year with a 45-10 record."

Joey is looking forward to his final season at Dyersburg and is hopeful fork another winning year. Last year their team won Regionals. Brett will be working hard for a good senior year of baseball with the Manila Lions.
