Third quarter woes doom Lady Mustangs

Whitlee Layne and Mallory Hartley combined for 28 points to help push Bay past Buffalo Island Central, 47-37, in senior girls basketball action Monday night at Bay.

The Lady Yellowjackets held a slim 14-11 advantage at halftime, but outscored the Lady Mustangs 17-6 in the third quarter to take commanding 31-17 lead entering the final frame.

Layne led Bay with 17 points while Hartley chipped in 11 more. Brianna Lambert topped BIC with nine points while Heather Sipes added seven points and seven rebounds.

In junior high action, Bay got 15 points from Olivia Ferguson and took a 26-15 victory over BIC.

BIC traveled to Marmaduke Thursday night and fell to the Lady Greyhounds, 49-24. Marmaduke held a 22-16 lead at intermission before outscoring the Lady Mustangs 13-0 in the third period to take a 35-16 advantage into the final frame.

Natalie Lentz led Marmaduke with 21 points while Tabitha Hyten recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points while grabbing 14 boards.

In junior high play, Marmaduke ran its record to 19-0 with a 59-16 victory over BIC.

BIC returns to the hardcourt Monday night against East Poinsett County at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette. The Lady Mustangs host Kipp Blytheville Friday night before participating in the Pangburn Classic Saturday.
