Monette Veterans Park Committee finalizes plans

Tuesday, November 29, 2016

Monette Veterans Park Committee met Nov. 14 to finalize plans for the placement of a historical monument at the downtown stoplight intersection.

There is space on the monument for engraving 1,244 names. A list of potential names of veterans has been compiled from Monette and Macey Cemetery records and Monette American Legion records, with hopes these names can be added to the monument. Students from the EAST Initiative class at Buffalo Island Central High School are also assisting with location of veterans graves and addition of names.

Several large donations have been received toward construction of the monument, and include: $80,000 from John Paul Masner; $10,000 from Nucor-Yamato Steel; $5,000 from Entergy Corp.; and $4,000 from David and Verna Lou Harrell.

Families and friends of veterans have purchased individual engravings at $40 each. A deadline of Jan. 1, 2017, was set for accepting veterans park forms and the addition of new names. Forms can be picked up at Monette City Hall.

A potential monument completion date and special dedication is planned for Memorial Day 2017.
